Angelo Gousse, MD, Past President

Angelo E. Gousse M.D. ( Biography )

Dr. Angelo Gousse, who graduated cum laude from Yale University School of Medicine, completed his residency in Urology at Baylor College of Medicine and further honed his expertise during a fellowship at UCLA. He was subsequently recruited by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to lead the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Urology Program. An esteemed member of several prestigious urologic societies, Dr. Gousse has shared his knowledge as a visiting professor and guest speaker across Europe, Asia, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

In the wake of Haiti’s devastating earthquake in 2010, Dr. Gousse became a vocal advocate for advancing urologic care at the national level in Haiti. In 2014, he organized the first-ever Haitian American Urology Conference held in person in Haiti, a pivotal event that led to Dr. Gousse being tasked with developing urology in the country. He spearheaded the creation of the Global Association for the Support of Haitian Urology (GASHU), mobilizing both Haitian and American-trained urologic academic leaders in this effort.

The initiatives led by GASHU received backing from prominent organizations, including the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad (AMHE), Société Haitienne d’Urologie, the Global Philanthropic Committee in Urology, and the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU). Through these collective efforts, the aim was to bolster urologic education and care in Haiti and create a sustainable model for development.

Dr. Gousse initiated a program to select one newly graduated Haitian resident every six months to train in his voiding dysfunction and reconstructive urology unit at the Bladder Health and Reconstructive Urology Institute as a clinical fellow. The goal of this initiative was to help develop future leaders in urology in Haiti who would return to train others.

Building on his experience with GASHU, Dr. Gousse helped devise a Medical Education Strategy aimed at rapidly advancing urology education in resource-poor countries worldwide. This academic work has been presented at numerous international and national meetings and published in medical journals to serve as a model for other countries to emulate.
